Free fall
An object released from rest speeds up under gravity. Distance grows with the square of time. Level: standard.
Learning goals
- Watch a dropped object speed up.
- Read distance as one half g times time squared.
- Estimate the time to fall a known height.
Simulation
Released from rest. Air resistance is left out, so mass does not change the fall.
Formulas
- Distance. d = 0.5 g t^2
- Speed. v = g t
- Time. t = sqrt(2 d / g)
Worked example: drop 20 m from rest, g = 9.81. Time 2.02 s.
Quiz
Answers
- An object dropped from rest has what starting speed? Answer: Zero.
- If the fall time doubles, and air resistance is left out, the distance is about how many times larger? Answer: 4 times.
